I come to with a start, sitting up in what I can only assume is another guest room. Or maybe the same one I trashed months ago. I don’t stop to confirm, preferring to haul ass out of there and back to my Shortcake.

The last thing I remember, Mena’s incandescent blue light, flashes of green...

I shake my head, not even trying to make sense of the images floating around in there. I try traveling to Nicola, but that doesn’t seem to work. My brain practically dings with the memory of Max’s hulked-out ward, so I adjust my course to outside the training room.

Bupkis.

What the fuck kind of juju is this? Can no one travel in here? Fine, I’ll walk.

The stairs prove to be tricky bastards, but I make it down them unscathed, stomping to the training center. My limbs are weak and rubbery, my knees having the distinct consistency of gelatin.

I need to see Nicola.

I need to feel the breath in her lungs and the heartbeat thumping against her ribs. I need to see the flush of her lips and the fire in her hair. I need her.

Then, I need answers.

I don’t get to see Nicola right away. What I do get is a shit load of hassle and a baby in my arms once again. Every person in the house save Aurelia and Nicola are huddled in the small vestibule with the med bay beyond. The white tiled hall seems too tight of a fit for the cluster of people, the space seeming smaller due to the attitudes being tossed around and the sheer size of the seven men and two women huddled there.

West’s deep rumble cuts through the throng of pissed off voices like a knife.

“I swear, someone needs to start talking some sense. I don’t need bullshit posturing. What I need are some goddamn answers. Why can’t you get the cuff off, Max?” West orders, gesturing to the pretty, blue-haired Witch.

Somehow between when I passed out/attempted to die, Max got here. I don’t quite know what cuff they are talking about, but I’m assuming it is Talia’s. I have an inkling it may be what is causing all the trouble.

“Like I was trying to say,” Max mutters, giving a pointed look at Ian, “The cuff won’t come off with magic. I have tried ten different spells even laced with my own special brand of juju. I got nothing. The sigils aren’t something I’ve seen before. I’d need to do research into a form I don’t know, and the only fucking kind of magic I don’t know by heart is necromancy. No offense, but I’m not going to cross that bridge. I’ve got enough heat with my family already, I don’t need to add that coal to the fire.” Max takes a defiant stance, arms crossed, feet planted wide like she thinks West is going to start a fight.

Or maybe she’s more worried about the curiously silent Evan at his right.

I know for a fact West would never strike a lady.
